Logan College Museum, Carterville </h4></li> <li><h4>September 26: Meeting, American Fluorite Museum </h4></li> <li><h4>October 24: Meeting, Science Center & African American Museum, Carbondale </h4></li> <li><h4>November 28: Meeting, White County Historical Society, Carmi </h4></li> </ul> <li> <h3>News from the Illinois Association of Museums</h3> </li> <ul> <li> Adrienne Barkley Giffin distributed the spring workshop brochure on interpretive tours which will be held on April 11 in Lockport. Registration will be limited to 35 participants. The brochure is available <a href="http://www.state.il.us/hpa/iam/workshops.html"> here</a>.</li> <li> The next board meeting will be April 18 and an update will be given at the May SIAM meeting. If you have ideas, comments, or concerns that you would IAM to address please contact IAM Board President Claudia Dant (ctdant@shawneelink.net), IAM Board Secretary Adrienne Barkley Giffin (museum@jalc.edu), or IAM Region 1 Director 45 Mike Jones (pmjones45@earthlink.net). </li> </ul> <li> <h3>Marketing Committee Report</h3> No report. </li> <li> <h3>Technical Assistance Committee Report</h3> Get ideas for roundtable discussions and workshops to Lori. <li> <h3>Development Committee Report</h3> The development workshop is being organized for Saturday, April 23, 2005, at John A. Logan College. A brochure will be mailed soon. </li> <li> <h3>Administrative Committee</h3> Adrienne reported that the committee will meet before the May SIAM meeting. </li> <li> <h3>Brochure Committee Report</h3> Pam Madden reported that Southern Illinois Tourism may be able to provide half the funding for the brochure and they will distribute them to rest areas. The representatives from White County asked that they be taken to the rest area in their county, which is the first rest stop in Illinois coming from Indiana.</li> <li> <h3>Website Development</h3> Send information and photographs of your museums for inclusion on the website to David Leitner. Physical photographs should be mailed to: David Leitner, University Museum, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL 62901-4508 Digital photographs 72 dpi and 6¾ wide OR 180 dpi and 4¾ wide should be sent in .jpeg format to museum@siu.edu. </li> <li> <h3> New Business </h3> There was no new business. </li> <li> <h3>Round Table Discussion: Recognizing Volunteers and Staff</h3> <h4>Practices for recognizing volunteers and paid staff included:</h4> <ul> <li>Recognition in exhibition space when volunteers have assisted with the exhibit. </li> <li>Listing in newsletter and on website. </li> <li> Nominate volunteers for an Illinois Association of Museums award. Visit http://www.state.il.us/hpa/iam/aw_comp.html for competitive awards (volunteer of the year and lifetime volunteer achievement). Visit http://www.state.il.us/hpa/iam/aw_anniv.html for volunteer service awards for 25 or 50 years of volunteer service. </li> <li>Invite a volunteer or group of volunteers to an opening reception and honor them at the event. </li> <li>Provide special gifts for 5, 10, etc. years of service. Keep the gift related to the mission of your museum. Cedarhurst gives medallions made by a local artist for 5 years and gives original artwork by local artists for 10 years. </li> <li>Give membership benefits for a certain number of hours earned until the volunteer is given a free membership. </li> <li>Have volunteers wear something that identifies them. The Science Center¼s volunteers wear green aprons and photo IDs. </li> <li>Provide a space only for volunteers like a break room with lockers for their personal items. </li> <li>Give a plaque to a volunteer of the year at the museum¼s annual meeting. </li> </ul> <li> <h3>Adjourn</h3> The next SIAM event will be the Development Workshop on April 23 at John A. Logan College in Carterville. The next meeting will be on May 23 at the Wabash County Museum in Mt.
