“Momentum” was commissioned by the Illinois Capital Development Board, Illinois Percent for Art Program and installed in 2004. Medwedeff explains “that each sculpture is a narrative of structure. In consideration of the location at the School of Engineering, the design concept emerges from an examination of the standard principles of engineering, applied in unusual ways for the purpose of creating a dramatic landmark that challenges preconceived notions of structural forms so as to inspire imaginations.”
Medwedeff was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. He studied at the University of Memphis and the Memphis Academy of Art. He was an apprentice of James Wallace. He earned his BFA and was recipient of the Rickert-Ziebold Trust Award at SIUC. Likewise, he earned an MFA from the School of Art and Design at SIUC.
